SARS Tax Season 2025: Key Filing Dates and Updates

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially announced the timelines for the 2025 Tax Season. Understanding these important dates is essential to ensure compliance and avoid any penalties for late submissions.

Summary of Key Deadlines:

  • Auto-assessments: 7 July 2025 to 20 July 2025
Taxpayers selected for automatic assessment will receive a notification via SMS or email within this window. If you accept the auto-assessment as accurate, no further action is required. Should there be any discrepancies or missing information, you will have until 20 October 2025 to revise and submit your return through eFiling.
  • Manual filing for non-provisional taxpayers: 21 July 2025 to 20 October 2025
This filing period applies to individual taxpayers who were not auto-assessed and are not classified as provisional taxpayers.
  • Filing Period for Provisional Taxpayers and Trusts: 21 July 2025 to 19 January 2026
This includes individuals earning income from multiple sources, such as self-employment, rental income, or freelance work, as well as trusts.

Noteworthy updates and reminders:

  • Electronic Correspondence Only
As of 31 May 2025, SARS has discontinued the use of postal services for system-generated letters. All official communication will be delivered via digital platforms, such as eFiling and the SARS MobiApp. It is therefore essential to keep your contact details on file with SARS current, and to be vigilant in protecting yourself against fraudulent communications.
  • Digital Tools for Filing
SARS encourages taxpayers to make use of its online platforms — including eFiling and the MobiApp — to simplify the filing process and reduce delays.

We recommend that taxpayers begin collating the necessary documents as early as possible to facilitate a smooth and timely submission. Verifying that your personal and banking information is up to date with SARS will also help avoid administrative issues.
